Read to Someone
This week we starting practicing "Read to Someone". This daily is a lot like read to self except that you have a partner to read to. Partners take turns reading their books. This gives the students a chance to practice fluency. Students learned that they need to sit in EEKK (ask them what that means) and they face a wall so that the sound of their whispers is going away from the others that are doing other dailys.
Greenlee and Dalaney show us what Read to Someone looks like.
Occasionally we have an odd number of students choosing Read to Someone. When that happens, one student has the opportunity to read to Freddie. He loves to listen to kindergartners read!
Deja is reading to Freddie.

We spent a good part of today making props and practicing to act out some of our favorite nursery rhymes. I video taped it and hope to include the video on the blog, but that is new technology to me...so please give me some time to figure it out. I do have some pictures of the actors to share with you.

Sight Words
We are continually adding to our list of kindergarten sight words. Learning these words is so important in your child becoming a beginning reader. Many of these words are difficult if not impossible to "sound out". Your child will also come across these words often in their books.
I did a quick assessment today to see how each student was doing in learning the six sight words we have had so far. Obviously, many of you have been working on reviewing these words at home. It really pays off in the classroom.
I have given a few different ideas of ways to review in previous newsletters. I think in would be interesting for me and other parents if you would comment to this blog and describe what works for you and your child when you review.

Little Jack Horner
We started nursery rhyme week today by learning "Little Jack Horner". We made a Christmas pie that we can pull plums out of. The cool thing is that our plums have the sight words we have learned so far. When your child brings home his/her pie today, use it as a tool to practice the sight words.
Here is Emma's Christmas pie.
Work on Writing
Last week I introduced "Work on Writing", the second part on the Daily 5. We learned that it is a lot like "Read to Self". The differences are that students are writing the whole time instead of reading. Also, they need to begin by writing the date code (9-13-10), then do the writing, and finally they can illustrate what they wrote. We talked about how our words and our pictures need to match.
Henry shows us what "Work on Writing" looks like.

Box Tops for Education
You can help our school earn "free" money. Clip the box tops on specially marked items and send them to school with your child. We are having a friendly competition between classes to see who can bring in the most box tops from now until the end of September. You can also have relatives and friends collect box tops for you.
